The Central Coast of California, and especially the 90-mile stretch along Highway 1 between Carmel and San Simeon, is known as one of the most jaw-dropping on Earth. On one side, you’ll see the soaring Santa Lucia Mountain Range, and on the other, dramatic cliffs that are pounded by the crashing waves of the Pacific.

Big Sur is renowned for its isolated beaches, and it even hosts a a rare purple-sand beach. Its hue comes from the manganese garnet deposits that are found in the surrounding rocks. At Pfeiffer Burns State Park, marvel at the 80-foot-tall waterfall that plunges from the dramatic cliffs onto the sands below.
