Phnom Penh is experiencing a period of rapid development. When I lived there (which was less than a decade ago) the only movie theater in the city was on the top floor of a couple’s house, where they played DVDs on a projector while we sat on bean bags and snacked on packaged popcorn. Nowadays, there are plenty of real theaters to choose from among other modern developments.
The traditional culture in Cambodia has managed to both change with the evolution of the country as well as remain immensely rich. Phnom Penh is one of the best places to witness this. The royal ballet of Cambodia is a stunning traditional dance form.
You can catch a show in Phnom Penh and watch the graceful gestures of the dancers as they move about the stage in towering headdresses and costumes that take hours to sew on.
Another traditional form of Khmer performance to see is shadow puppet theater, where a combination of shadow puppets and dancers take the stage.
For a different form of culture, check out the silk weaving island of Koh Dach. It is a tranquil island only a ferry ride away from the hustle and bustle of Phnom Penh. Here you can observe silk being hand-dyed and sewn on wooden looms. You can also purchase the high-quality fabrics at the source for a cheaper price than you would get at the markets.

Surprising Shopping
I’ll admit that shopping is not one of the first things I associate with Phnom Penh. But this city is full of surprises. If you want your shopping to truly be an experience, head over to the Russian Market, known to locals as Toul Tom Poung. It is a bazaar-style market with small (and often cramped) pathways and high heat — which only add to its charm.
The Russian Market is the perfect place to pick up souvenirs or any bits and bobs that you didn’t know you needed. You may spot some authentic discounted name-brand items from companies that run factories in the city.
There are many great spots around the city for stylish boutique shopping as well. Check out Street 240 for a row of unique fashionable clothing and decor stores. You can take a break from your spree at the famous “The Chocolate Shop” along the same street.
AEON Mall is a western-style mall and the hub for name-brand shopping in Phnom Penh. This is a great place for a relaxing day spent in the comfort of air conditioning.
