Have Loads of Long Distance Family Fun on 4 UK Road Trips

A Cross-Country Jaunt: Dublin to Waterford

Comprised of a relatively modest 70,000 square kilometers, the Emerald Isle doesn’t span a lot of space. But kilometer for kilometer, it packs plenty of striking stops into its borders — and this trip will run your family through more than a few of them as you cross from one coast of Ireland to the other.

Beginning in Dublin, head west on the M4 to Tullamore. The town is mostly known for the whiskey it began producing in 1829, yet there are other attractions. Tour the dramatic Charleville Forest Castle, stroll beside the picturesque Grand Canal that bisects the town, and gaze at the giant statues in nearby Lough Boora Parklands.

After Tullamore, it’s on to Athlone, a city almost smack in the middle of Ireland’s geographic center. You’ll find some worthwhile shopping options and a few interesting piece of architecture, most notably Athlone Castle.

But this is mostly a place to take a break before striking out for Galway. A bustling, vibrant place, Galway boasts great grub, charming bed and breakfasts, and the Atlantic Ocean itself. If you don’t fancy a dip, go on and get close to local aquatic life at the Galway Atlantaquaria.

Limerick lies some 100 kilometers to the south and fairly teems with things to do. Take a carriage ride, catch a Munster Rugby match, browse the bustling Limerick Milk Market, and witness where King William and King James II struck their famous agreement at Treaty Stone on Thomond Bridge.

Once you’ve gotten your fill of Ireland’s third largest city, head southeast to finish up at Waterford. This ancient city has lots to offer history buffs, particularly in the Viking Triangle section. As for the kids (who are probably ready to stretch their legs by this point), Activate Waterford has an extensive indoor play area and Copper Coast Mini Farm will let little ones get up close and personal with various animals.
